Sizes and tolerances
0.40 to 3.0 mm single wire, and 7, 19 or 37 strand where the run needs flexibility.
Single wire
| Diameter band | Finished tolerance | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 0.40 – 0.80 mm | ±0.010 mm | Drop wire, small conductors |
| 0.80 – 1.60 mm | ±0.015 mm | Messenger, ground wire |
| 1.60 – 3.00 mm | ±0.020 mm | Grounding, guy strand, heavy conductor |
Stranded
| Construction | Used for |
|---|---|
| 7 strand | Flexible conductor, drop wire |
| 19 strand | Messenger and overhead conductor |
| 37 strand | Where the run needs the highest flexibility |
Ovality and concentricity
Diameter is measured in-line; ovality and cladding concentricity are measured on a section. An eccentric cladding is thinner on one side, and that side is where corrosion starts — which is why both numbers are reported rather than only the nominal wall.
