Grades and composition
Nickel, nickel-iron and nickel-molybdenum grades, each bought for a different combination of heat and corrosion.
Nickel-chromium
| Grade | UNS | Family | Service ceiling | Character |
|---|
| Inconel 600 | UNS N06600 | NiCr 76/15 | 1,100 °C | Oxidation, furnace furniture, sheathing |
| Inconel 601 | UNS N06601 | NiCr 60/23 | 1,200 °C | Cyclic oxidation, kiln parts, mesh belts |
| Inconel 625 | UNS N06625 | NiCrMo with Nb | 980 °C | Corrosion plus strength, welding wire |
| Inconel 718 | UNS N07718 | NiCrFe with Nb, Mo | 700 °C | Age-hardenable springs and fasteners |
Nickel-iron-chromium
| Grade | UNS | Family | Where it is used |
|---|
| Incoloy 800 | UNS N08800 | FeNiCr | Process equipment, heat exchangers |
| Incoloy 800H | UNS N08810 | FeNiCr, higher carbon | Creep service at temperature |
| Incoloy 825 | UNS N08825 | FeNiCrMo with Cu | Sulphuric and phosphoric service |
Nickel-molybdenum
| Grade | UNS | Family | Where it is used |
|---|
| Hastelloy C-276 | UNS N10276 | NiMoCr | Wide chemical resistance, pollution control, aggressive chloride service |
Choosing between them
- If the problem is oxidation at temperature, the 600 / 601 / 800 family is the starting point.
- If the problem is corrosion with some heat, 625 or C-276.
- If the problem is strength at temperature and the part is a spring or a fastener, 718 — because it can be aged after forming.
- If the answer is not obvious, send the service conditions and the grade is discussed rather than guessed.
