Sizes and tolerances
Round wire from 0.10 to 10.0 mm, and ribbon to drawing, with the tolerance held on each band.
Round wire
| Diameter band | Finished tolerance | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 0.10 – 0.30 mm | ±0.008 mm | Fine elements, small appliances |
| 0.30 – 1.00 mm | ±0.010 mm | General element winding |
| 1.00 – 4.00 mm | ±0.020 mm | Industrial furnace elements |
| 4.00 – 10.0 mm | ±0.030 mm | Heavy elements, busbar and terminal work |
Ribbon
| Width | To drawing, 0.5 mm upward |
| Thickness | To drawing |
| Edge | Rolled or slit, to drawing |
| Used for | Elements where a flat section is needed for heat transfer or space |
Resistance per metre
Ohms per metre falls steeply as diameter rises, so the same grade at two sizes gives two different element designs. Send the target resistance per metre and the length instead of the diameter alone — the diameter follows from those two, and the tolerance on it decides whether the finished element lands within the wattage the designer intended.
Bend radius
Elongation is quoted per lot precisely because it sets the bend radius the wire will take without cracking. Where an element has tight bends, say so at enquiry; a lot with higher elongation can be selected for that order.
