Grades and composition

Two alloy families: nickel-chromium for high temperature, copper-nickel for lower temperature and precise resistance.

Nickel-chromium

GradeNominal compositionMax serviceAtmosphereWound into
NiCr 80/20Ni 80 / Cr 201,200 °COxidising, no sulphurFurnace and kiln elements
NiCr 60/15Ni 60 / Cr 15 / Fe balance1,150 °COxidising, no sulphurElements with shorter duty cycles

Both are austenitic and form a protective chromium oxide layer in service. That layer is what gives the service life; in a reducing or sulphur-bearing atmosphere it does not form, and the element fails early. Tell us the atmosphere — it decides the grade as much as the temperature does.

Copper-nickel

GradeNominal compositionRelative resistivityUsed for
CuNi 1Cu / Ni 1Lower resistanceWiring, low-value resistors
CuNi 10Cu / Ni 10LowResistors, heating cable
CuNi 23Cu / Ni 23MediumResistors, shunts
CuNi 44Cu / Ni 44Highest of the familyPrecision resistors, thermocouple negative leg
CuMn12NiCu / Mn 12 / NiLow, temperature-stablePrecision and standard resistors

What the certificate states per grade

ResistivityMeasured, per lot, in ohm·mm²/m
DiameterMeasured in-line, 0.001 mm resolution
Tensile and elongationPer lot, so the windability is known before winding
CompositionMelt analysis, on 3.1 certificates
